2.) PARKING - IF the Tower Road lot is full as it has often been weekends so far this fall - please park at Haycock Boat Launch off Mountainview Drive (Route 563) instead and ride to the trailhead on the opposite side of the bridge. DO NOT park along Tower Rd. or Fink Dr. as these are both clearly posted as "No Parking" by Nockamixon Township. Also avoid parking along Mountainview Drive between the bridge and the trailhead out of courtesy to fishermen traditionally parking there to access the lake along Lower Hammer Trail.
1.) UPCOMING CLOSURE - All mountain bike trails at Nockamixon will again be CLOSED on December 1, 2012 - the first Saturday of antlered (or "buck") season. Please come out and ride on Sunday 12/2 instead, the weather's looking great and nearly all trails have now been restored to pre-Sandy conditions with the minor exception of Upper Hammer which will require a little additional work this weekend.

All remaining storm damage along Upper EWR interfering with trail usage was removed today in advance of the first day of deer hunting season tomorrow, Monday, 11/26. Please remember that the Nockamixon trails are CLOSED on 11/26 and Saturday, 12/1. Please wear orange all other days between 11/27 and the end of January as all trails are open to deer hunting with shotguns.
Next Sunday work is planned to remove all remaining storm damage on Upper Hammer. The Nockamixon Mountain Bike Trail system will be CLOSED on Monday, November 26th and the following Saturday 12/1 for the opening day of buck season and the following Saturday during the season. Closure signs are posted at the trailheads - please avoid riding at Nockamixon on these two days.
Please keep a couple things in mind as the fall riding season kicks into high gear following Hurricane Sandy and the couple weeks of work necessary to restore the trails at Nockamixon.
1.) PLEASE FOLLOW THE SPEED LIMITS ON FINK DRIVE AND TOWER ROAD. The speed limit on dirt/gravel Fink Drive beyond its paved portion near South Park Road is 25 M.P.H. Paved Tower Road from the Route 611 light to the parking lot is posted at 35 M.P.H. These roads are narrow and uneven in spots and therefore not designed for traffic traveling at speeds higher than this, especially since equestrians, walkers, and cyclists frequently use these roads in addition to motorists utilizing the shortcut between South Park Road and Route 611. 2.) PLEASE ACQUIRE AND WEAR FLUORESCENT ORANGE FROM NOW THROUGH EARLY FEBRUARY. Help hunters see you! Also, avoid riding on opening days (i.e. the Monday following Thanksgiving - 'buck season" and/or riding on Saturdays and/or weekdays near dawn and dusk when game is most active and hunters may be present in large numbers. Thanks to the hard work of over 25 volunteers work was completed on the western end of Upper Jaywalk and all of South Park loops this weekend. Thus, all mountain bike trails at Nockamixon are officially REOPENED as of this afternoon.
Please be aware that not all trails have been raked to bare clare and that leaves and twigs remain in many areas. Also, numerous uprooted trees in close proximity to the original trail have taken out the trail surface requiring trimming of roots protruding in the realigned trail and the restoration of soil to the trail surface which remains slightly soft in some areas. A huge "thank you" to all the volunteers who assisted the regular trailbuilders at Nockamixon over the past two weekends to A huge number of mountain bikers (approximately 30) came out today to clear fallen trees on five of six loops in the Nockamixon Mountain Bike Trail system. The group divided into four teams to cover more ground and got an amazing amount of work accomplished on the Upper Hammer, Upper Cold Spot, all of Haycock Run and EWR, Lower Jaywalk and portions of Upper Jaywalk. Work remains on Upper Jaywalk near the bumptrack and all of South Park.
The following represents only a partial list of all those who gave their time today. Thank you! Jay de Jesus Alan Graham Ed Hall Dave Hall Anthony Hunsinger Chad Kelly Walt Kilgus Kenny Magee John Martin Jeremy M. Ken Melin Scott Molnar Mike Mulcahy Rick Rogers Jon Roth Jay S. John Terembula Mark Woodward Apologies to all of those who came out today but whom we weren't able to get their names . . . . Small groups of Nockamixon trail builders may get out during this week to continue clearing damage. However, another major clean-up day is scheduled for next Sunday, November 11th at 9:00 A.M. Location TBD. All mountainbikers interested in helping reopen Nockamixon's trails ASAP are invited to meet Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 9:00 A.M. at the Tower Road lot trailhead to assist with handclearing sawn chunks of log, branches, and raking smaller debris from the trails. Those who have handsaws, pruners, and sturdy leaf rakes (wire or plastic) are invited to bring them. Please wear appropriate work clothes including gloves, boots, etc.
Due to the severity of the damage we are planning this to be an all-day event to clear as much as possible. However, if you can only spare a couple of hours at any point in the day you are certainly welcome to drop by. Thanks in advance! The Nockamixon Mountain Bike Trail system remains CLOSED until further notice. Assessment of the northern loops by Nockamixon trailbuilders revealed severe damage over long stretches of trail involving uprooted trail tread creating large holes as well as fallen, leaning, and hanging trees collectively presenting unsafe conditions for riders that must be removed prior to reopening the trails. The southern loops have not been inspected yet, however the damage must be assumed to be widespread resulting in impassable conditions systemwide. Please continue to avoid riding at Nockamixon until reopening notification is posted here.
An important emergency trail maintenance session is planned for Sunday, November 4th, 2012 at 9:00 A.M. at the Tower Road lot trailhead. Please refer to the post above for specifics. |
